No gold but Malaysia leaves Olympics with best ever haul

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 21 — Malaysia ended the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro with its highest medals tally after Datuk Lee Chong Wei delivered another silver medal to make it four silvers and a bronze.

The total is the country’s best by far since it began participating in the Olympic Games as the Federation of Malaysia in 1964, easily eclipsing the previous high water marks of Atlanta 1996 and London 2012.

Malaysia watched Lee last night as he challenged China’s Chen Long in the badminton men’s singles final for the country’s last opportunity to bag the elusive gold medal in the current Olympics, but the Chinese player was able to deny Lee and win 18-21, 18-21.

Lee’s silver adds to those won by men’s badminton doubles pair Goh V. Shem and Tan Wee Kiong, mixed doubles pair Goh Liu Ying and Chan Peng Soon, and synchronised diving duo Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong. Cyclist Azizulhasni Awang won a bronze.
Speaking after his match, Lee conceded to feeling the nerves in his match against the world number two Chen.
“If you compare this to my two previous Olympics, 2008 and 2012, this was my best performance, but my opponent was simply better and I accept that,” Lee said in an interview with satellite television news channel Astro Awani.
“I know Malaysians, my former coaches my family are all watching… I know everyone is disappointed. I tried my best, but people will be disappointed. I cannot do anything except apologise… I tried my best,” said a visibly emotional Lee.
With his latest, Lee has provided three of the six silver medals Malaysia has from all the Olympic Games in which it has participated, having won the same prize in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
The first silver won by the country was delivered in 1996 by badminton men’s doubles pair Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock. Contemporary single’s star Rashid Sidek gave Malaysia its first ever medal, a bronze, in Barcelona 1992.
Having never won more than two medals at any Olympics, Malaysia is leaving Rio de Janeiro with five, despite the heartbreak of again missing out on the elusive gold.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who watched Lee’s match with over a thousand people at a special viewing session in Putrajaya, said he and Malaysians remained proud of Lee despite last night’s result.
Fellow Olympic medallist Azizulhasni, who was also at the screening in Putrajaya, perhaps summed up Malaysia’s feelings best via an Instagram post.

Pokemon GO-es live in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: While young Malaysians have jumped on the Pokemon GO bandwagon, many still prefer to stay indoors to indulge in the game.

The viral augmented reality mobile game, which requires players to walk around outside to catch virtual pets, has finally gone live in Malaysia after its release in the United States last month.
The game is particularly popular with people in their 20s, many who grew up with the videogame or the TV show based on it.
They can now finally pursue their childhood dream of being Pokemon trainers.
Fresh graduate Mohd Mustaqeem Anuar, 26, said he woke up early to play the game after hearing that it would be launched yesterday.
He said he rode around his neighbourhood in Ampang on motorcycle to look for Pokemon and managed to catch 30 by noon.
Pokemon GO requires players to walk around to find the virtual pets and locations called PokeStops which will reward players with gifts and PokeGyms where players can challenge each other.
“Usually the PokeStops will be at buildings or parks, but you don’t have to enter the buildings. It’s enough to be on location,” he said.
Lee Ming Han, 26, who works as a software engineer, said the wait was worth it.
“I’m now having the urge to take a week’s leave just to play it,” he added.
University student, Chong Jun Jie, 20, said he found out about Pokemon GO going live when he went to campus in the morning.
“I was surprised that my university area had several Pokestops and Pokemon gyms. Coming to class will never be boring again,” he said.
International Islamic University Malaysia student Nizam Hosen, 24, said he had looked forward to playing the game as it was very popular in other countries.
“Now I’m a happy Pokemon trainer,” he said.
Teacher Ting Chee Han, 31, lamented about the availability of the app, saying he hoped his students could focus in class.
“International news reported several Pokemon GO-related injuries. We need to educate our children so that they know how to play responsibly, so that they don’t get hurt while playing the game,” he cautioned.
Banking executive Tan Li Hoon, 25, was happy that the Pokemon app was “for real” this time as it was removed after several hours the last few times.
“We can now enjoy the game fully!” said Tan.
A check by The Star found many people playing the game while walking around malls.
Twitter and Facebook were abuzz with postings about the game yesterday.
One Twitter user vowed to conquer all the PokeGyms in Kuala Lumpur while another, Melissa Boudville, posted: “Pokemon GO is out in Malaysia. I went out of my house, bought data and started riding around my area on my bike.”
However, there were the unlucky ones who found that their devices were incompatible with the game.
“I’m so sad that the game isn’t compatible with my phone,” said student Wan Eizzul Zulkifli, 23, adding that it could be an issue for phones with low specifications or low quality cameras.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission urged the people to put safety first while playing the popular game, warning Malaysians that the game could turn “harmful” if safety measures were overlooked.

THE RIO 2016 GAMES

THE RIO 2016 GAMES WILL PROVIDE THE BEST POSSIBLE ENVIRONMENT FOR PEAK PERFORMANCES. ATHLETES WILL ENJOY WORLD-CLASS FACILITIES, INCLUDING A SUPERB VILLAGE, ALL LOCATED IN ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST BEAUTIFUL CITIES, IN A COMPACT LAYOUT FOR MAXIMUM CONVENIENCE.

The competition venues will be clustered in four zones – Barra, Copacabana, Deodoro and MaracanĂ£ – and connected by a high-performance transport ring. Nearly half of the athletes will be able to reach their venues in less than 10 minutes, and almost 75 per cent will do so in less than 25 minutes. Of the 34 competition venues, of which 18 are already operational, eight will undergo some permanent works, seven will be totally temporary and nine are being constructed as permanent legacy venues.
The Rio Games will also celebrate and showcase sport, thanks to the city’s stunning setting and a desire to lift event presentation to new heights. At the same time, Rio 2016 will be an opportunity to deliver the broader aspirations for the long-term future of the city, region and country – an opportunity to hasten the transformation of Rio de Janeiro into an even greater global city.
